Hoping this is the last update I have to make about that friggin' quote. But at least now we have an explanation.

So. Don't rejoice too much in the death of anybody, because it suggests hate, and that's bad. Also, don't repeat a quote and attribute it to somebody unless you can independently verify, with little or no doubt, that it's actually what that person said. Ok? Ok. Mass Communication Ethics is adjourned. Now go out and enjoy this lovely day.

Read the quote, had my doubts, tried to verify it but couldn't, reblogged it anyway. Promptly found the above article on Facebook.

Apparently the first part of the quote--the part about "mourning the loss of thousands"--cannot be attributed to King, however the "returning hate for hate" part can.

Leaving it there for accountability and posterity.
